From the Inside

From the Inside was an exhibition that featured both visual art and original poems. The artwork in the exhibition is the visual response by local artists to the poems written by the participants in Free on the Inside writing program. Participating artists selected poems that would either inspire them to create new artworks or find deep connections with their own existing creations.

This exhibition also highlights the men who participate in the Free on the Inside writing program at Everglades Correctional Institution. Created by Sharonda Eccentrich Richardson, this program is designed to introduce, educate, and cultivate the positive impact of poetry in the prison system. These programs are specifically designed to awaken moral responsibility, positive and effective communication skills, self-awareness and positive outlets to incarcerated men and women in various correctional institutions in Florida. Partnering with state and federal prisons to bring spoken word and cultural arts into prisons in order to provide inmates with an experience that not only enriches their time of incarnation, but to help aid in transitions back into society, in an attempt to create true rehabilitation.

Featured Artists: Yolanda Friderici, Nick Henry, Felix Jackson, Justin Kolosick, Jill Lefkowitz, Roberto Navarrete, Felisa Prieto, Jose Pablo Serrano, and Catalina Villegas.

On view: Bailey Contemporary Arts, March 6 through June 24, 2020.
